Analysis shows that introducing a more effective test into the diagnostic pathway could lead to around 2,565 earlier diagnoses annually, improving survival rates and quality of life.

Landmark Report into Prostate Cancer Screening

Prostate Cancer Research commissioned Deloitte UK to assess the socio-economic impacts of prostate cancer screening in the UK. The comprehensive macroeconomic model built considers the impact of a series of screening scenarios, and the introduction of newer technologies to the pathway, to be tested both in the general population and in groups of men at higher risk.

PCR's Recommendations

PCR has made 3 recommendations as a result of the findings from the landmark report. These recommendations were presented at a cross-party parliamentary event on the 14th November where we launched the report.

  1. Introduce targeted prostate cancer screening for high-risk groups as soon as possible - Initially screening using the PSA test needs to be optimized, focusing on high risk groups; Black men, those with a family history and those with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation. Our cost-benefit analysis model showed this would give socioeconomic benefits with the fewest changes to the Health system.
  2. Trial new diagnostic tests in clinical practice - along with optimizing PSA testing, introducing new, more accurate, diagnostic technologies will be crucial to the roll out of a national screening program. We need to focus on getting these technologies trialed in clinic to allow them to gather sufficient real-world data and understand their impact on populations.
  3. Adopt AI-driven tech to enhance patient outcomes and efficiencies - The integration of AI into the NHS will improve patient outcomes and the economic benefits of screening through increasing the efficiency, accuracy and reliability of diagnosis. By adopting AI-driven technologies in imaging, we can streamline processes, reduce diagnostic errors and ensure resources are allocated more effectively.

Proven Connect's Role

Proven Connect is working to ensure new technologies in the prostate cancer space reach the patients. We work with early stage biotech companies to help drive them to the clinic, connecting them with funding, clinical leads and experts in the field. Looking at the recommendations of the report we can see now, more than ever, translational research is crucial in transforming the lives of those with prostate cancer.

Have you got a new technology and would like to know the socioeconomic impacts of integrating it into the NHS pathway?

Our model not only compares the current scenario—where no routine screening exists—with universal and targeted screening approaches but also provides the flexibility to assess new treatment innovations in prostate cancer. It offers a detailed economic analysis, capturing the broader financial implications beyond direct NHS costs.

If you have a new technology focused on prostate cancer, we are offering a service for biotechs to use the model. This will include enabling you to model the relative costs and benefits of introducing your technology under various scenario(s). Please get in touch to find out more.
